Ban on menthol & flavored tobacco
products now in effect
Yesterday the state’s ban on sales of menthol & flavored tobacco products in MA retail stores & online began.
The products restricted include menthol cigarettes, flavored e-cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco and chewing tobacco.
The law was passed in November, and MA is the first state to enact such a ban. This law restricts the sale & consumption of these products to licensed smoking bars only. It also places a 75% excise tax on nicotine vaping products.
LCTV videos of peaceful protest in Lynn & National Day of Mourning & Lament
On May 30th a peaceful protest was held in front of Lynn Police Dept. headquarters. LCTV’s John Peralta went down to cover the protest.
Over the weekend Mayor McGee’s office worked to have elected officials, faith leaders, and other municipal leaders in Lynn submit videos with statements to remember the dead & mourn their passing from the COVID-19 pandemic for the National Day of Mourning & Lament on June 1st. We were then given these videos to edit into a single video, which can be found below.
Virtual flag raisings in June
This month there will be 2 annual flag raisings for worthy causes at Lynn City Hall, for Juneteenth & Pride Month. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the public is being asked to watch them from the comfort of home this year.
The first is on June 9th for Juneteenth, organized by the North Shore Juneteenth Association. Juneteenth (celebrated on June 19th) is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. You can learn more about the history of this holiday by clicking here.
The other will be held on June 23rd for Pride month & was organized by the Lynn cultural Council, Lynn Community Assoc., Queer Lynn Scene, Downtown & Lynn Cultural District. LGBT Pride Month occurs every June in the US to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots. They are widely considered to constitute the most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States.
The general public is only being invited to watch these events online and on TV. Only Mayor McGee and a few people from the organizations are allowed.
MBTA Service during Public Demonstrations
Sunday evening, May 31, public safety and law enforcement personnel limited access to certain sections of the subway system in the Government Center, Boston Common, Tufts Medical Center, and Copley Square areas and diverted area bus routes due to incidents involving looting and fires. These decisions were made in the interest of public safety and to protect MBTA infrastructure.
In the event further demonstrations are planned that may affect the safe operation of the MBTA, service adjustments will be made and communicated to customers through T-Alerts and social media. Service adjustments will remain in place until law enforcement deems it safe to reopen stations and resume service routes.
The MBTA appreciates the cooperation of our customers concerning any service changes that may be necessary based on the guidance of law enforcement.
Customers are reminded that face coverings are required on buses, subways, and other vehicles in the system. In addition, MBTA modes already have limited service schedules due to the COVID-19 situation. For full information on current MBTA service, please visit mbta.com/coronavirus.

Lynn DPW services returning
The Lynn DPW has begun to offer many of its services to the public again that had been closed due to COVID-19 concerns. Leaf & yard waste opened back up this past weekend, while Covanta Days (formerly “Dumpster Days”) & White Goods recycling are returning this week.
The Lynn DPW expects Bulky Item Day will be busy the next three Saturdays, and asks residents to please be patient. Face coverings must be worn & social distancing must be maintained at all times for all three.

From Mayor McGee’s office: The Lynn Public Health Department has confirmed that as of today, the number of active, confirmed positive COVID-19 cases is 1,664 with 7 new cases today. 1,692 Lynn residents have recovered and 90 have died. The total number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Lynn since March 21, 2020, including those who have died and recovered, is 3,446. Restaurants may not provide any service beyond carry-out or delivery until specifically authorized to do so in Phase 2 of the Commonwealth’s Workplace Re-Opening Plan. Restaurants may provide outdoor table service at the commencement of Phase 2.
